Oncoplastic Breast Surgery

A one day oncoplastic breast surgery workshop was held prior to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Annual Scientific Congress (ASC) in Singapore in May 2014, providing the 50 participants, including Jane O’Brien and Melanie Walker, with the opportunity to increase their knowledge and surgical skills in oncoplastic breast surgery. The workshop was organized by the two conveners of the RACS Breast Section programme for the college meeting, including Melanie Walker (below right) The faculty was headed by Professor Jerome Pereira, (below left) Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at James Paget University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, who is a UK based national trainer for consultants and surgical trainees on breast oncoplastic and reconstruction surgery, and has led the development of a specialist Oncoplastic Mastership program at the University of East Anglia.

Oncoplastic Breast Surgery

The interactive workshop focused on breast conservation therapy and oncoplastic procedures, with an emphasis on techniques that can be used in routine practice.

The comprehensive one-day programme included:

  • Patient selection
  • Incision placement
  • Glandular remodelling
  • Approaches for dealing with difficult tumour locations including central and inferior tumours
  • Therapeutic mammoplasty
  • Dealing with complications
  • Symmetrisation surgery
